Center for Rural Studies

The Center for Rural Studies (CRS) is a nonprofit, fee-for-service research organization that addresses social, economic, and resource-based problems of rural people and communities. Based in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont, the Center provides consulting, research, and program evaluation services in Vermont, the United States, and abroad. The Center also serves as the U.S. Census Bureau's Vermont State Data Center.

The Center provides program evaluation services for youth, family and social service non-profit organizations throughout Vermont. Project areas include: micro business development, domestic violence, education and literacy, and restorative justice for youth. Executive summaries of evaluation reports and complete reports are now available online! Visit our new publications page for a complete list of our evaluation related journal publications.

CRS data resources include over 40 Social and Economic Indicators for every town in Vermont and the Vermont Community Data Bank. Recent collaborations have resulted in the Vermont School Report, an online database of Town Health and Recreation Resources, and the exciting development of a Vermont housing data clearinghouse at www.housingdata.org. The Center for Rural Studies is also the US Census Bureau's Vermont State Data Center to assist Vermonters with Census Data and Information.

Includes guides and training materials for citizens and community leaders, as well as information on community development projects including the Municipal E-Government Outreach project, the Community Planning Tools for Vermont project, the Vermont Planning Information Center, and VIG Citizen's Guides to Local Government.
